The goal of my project is to take the knowledge I will gain from shadowing doctors in different parts of the hospital and compare them apples to apples. In the little research that I have done preparing for this project I have found that these doctors will work different hours, and encounter different situations. It is important to realize the differences between the two so I know what each one holds and which direction I would want to lean towards one day. I will either present this by making a power point presentation, or a display board. Both of these would contain pictures I am able to take (I am not sure if I’ll be able to use pictures or not because of HIPPA regulations), and the comparing and contrasting points. However it is possible that I will take my project in a different direction once I begin the program. I do not fully know what all we will be encountering while in the program, so I am staying open minded so that I can adapt to any situation given to me and still produced clean, refined work.
Up to this point all research for my project has just been personal conversations with doctors or their staff, and experiences. Over the summer I shadowed a Pediatric Rheumatologist at Children’s Hospital in Denver. For a day I was able to follow her around on all of her rounds she had to make, then in the afternoon was able to sit in on some of her clinical meetings with potential patients. That day was the first time I saw how busy the life of a doctor could be when they were in a hospital instead of their own office, and it didn’t seem too bad. The other side to that is doctors in the hospital can be very busy. Dr. Mckinnis is actually a friends of our family, and during the month of January we barely saw her, and when we did she had her pager in her hand and look exhausted. So far I’ve only seen the prospective of a doctor in a hospital that works on the floor, so I look forward to see how that will compare to a doctor who has there own office and doesn’t normally work on the floor.
